Other Professional Society Affiliations: ISSA
Education: AS in Computer Science and BS in Information Technology, both from RIT
Company: Windstream
Job Title: Data Control Analyst
Job Description: I check to make sure all the phone toll from the switches is in so we can bill our customers appropriately.
# Years in this position: 3
Why my job is so SWEet: Problem solving -- when the toll doesn't come in or doesn't process, I have to come up with scripts or queries to find it or process it
Words of Wisdom: Never stop researching and learning about new computer technologies because the field of Information Technology changes and advances rapidly.
How has your work experience prepared you for your position in SWE (or other professional society)? It taught me to work as part of a large team and not be afraid to speak up with suggestions when I saw something that could be improved.

Name three things that others don’t know about you:
1. I'm a brother of Alpha Phi Omega Co-ed National Community Service Fraternity, and that's how I met my husband (he's also a brother).
2. Walt Disney World is one of my favorite vacation destinations and it's on my bucket list to visit all the Disney Parks in the world. I've been to the two parks at Disneyland in California, and I'm visiting Disneyland Paris for the first time in May.
3. I have been RITchie the RIT Tiger a number of times, including the time I surprised my dad at the President's Ball when he was celebrating the 35th anniversary of his RIT graduation.

Role in SWE: Member
Education: BS Civil Engineering, Syracuse University
Company: CHA
Job Title: Civil Engineer
Job Description: I design a project’s site layout, grading and drainage, utilities, and erosion and sediment control. I put together technical specifications and cost estimates as well as conduct inspections.
# Years in this position: 3.5 years
Why my job is so SWEet: I get the opportunity to work on a large variety of projects: small and large scale, local and across the country, as well as working with different disciplines within the company. That allows me to learn new things and keeps me on toes! I also love watching the construction process – there is so much to learn from going out in the field and seeing how contractors make your design a reality. It’s a great, satisfying feeling when a project is completed and you can say “I was a part of that”.
Words of Wisdom: Don’t be afraid of branching out of your comfort zone and trying new things, because there is so much to learn from projects that aren’t what you’re used to.
Do you have any hobbies? I don’t have that one thing I’m extremely passionate about, so I try to do a lot of different things: I snowboard, snowmobile, rock climb, hike, bike, play tennis, do yoga, knit, cross stitch, do puzzles, read, and spend time with friends and family.
Name three things that others probably don’t know about you: I am a big Syracuse basketball fan. I went every game I could in the 4 years I attended Syracuse University, including driving with 2 friends overnight to Atlanta to watch them in the 2013 Final Four. I also studied abroad for a semester in Dublin, Ireland and traveled to 7 countries while in Europe.

Role in SWE: Publicity & RES Newsletter
Education: BS Mechanical Engineering, Rochester Institute of Technology
Company: CHA Consulting
Job Title: Mechanical Engineer
Job Description: I work on the Mechanical team in the Campus and Institutions segment at CHA, meaning I can work on the design of HVAC, plumbing, or controls of airports, universities or correctional facilities.
# Years in this position: 1 month
Why my job is so SWEet: I enjoy being challenged and learning, so to be able to work on massive projects is a dream. I also get to combine my past controls experience with new mechanical skills. So I’m excited to build on my skill set.
Words of Wisdom: You will never know everything. If you feel like you do, then you’re doing something wrong.
Do you have any hobbies? I come from a traveling family, so I love going out of town, whether domestically or internationally. I try to get to Toronto & Nashville as much as possible to visit family and friends, I lived in Germany for a year, and spent three months in Costa Rica. I’m planning a trip to Southeast Asia to visit my sister and brother-in-law, who are traveling the world, and I hope to get to Cuba and Iceland in 2017, but I might run out of vacation time by then. I also love exploring different restaurants, and a good book.
Something that others probably don’t know about you: I’m the youngest of six, but I ended up being the second tallest (after my only brother). My mom says I used to hate school because it was “too easy.” According to her, I would cry from Friday about going to school on Monday. So I ended up skipping the first grade. I guess I stopped crying after that.

Job Description: I work as part of a project team to provide practical and cost-effective design solutions to a variety of development projects. My responsibilities include completing site plans, utility service design, stormwater management design, drainage, grading, earthwork, construction details, and agency approvals/permitting.
# Years in this position: 3 years
Why my job is so SWEet: I’ve gotten to work on a variety of different development projects, and the most rewarding aspect is getting to see our designs come to life! Site engineering has given me the opportunity to put my problem solving skills to the test, as every project site promotes different design challenges to overcome. As one of only two female engineers in our department, I feel we are always treated with respect and our work is greatly appreciated. Along with the design aspect, the people at BME make coming to work each day enjoyable, we work hard, have fun, and support each other when the going gets tough.
Words of Wisdom: Keep asking questions, don’t be afraid, and soak in everything you’re told. You literally keep learning something new every day!
Do you have any hobbies? I am an avid Syracuse Basketball and Denver Broncos fan. I enjoy playing basketball, golf, trying new recipes and traveling. BME’s office is also located in the Village of Fairport, adjacent to the canal…there is always something fun to do!
Something that others probably don’t know about you: I’ve slept over in the Carrier Dome a few nights while camping out for the SU/Villanova game my freshman year. I competitively rode horses for 10 years as well as won a NY State Championship in basketball. One of my dream vacations would be to go to New Zealand and visit some of the sets where The Lord of the Rings was filmed.

Jessica (Jess) Bull
Current SWE Positions: Outreach Chair
Other Professional Society Affiliations: ASHRAE
Education: MEng, B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from RIT; BA in Psychology from Binghamton University
Company: CHA, Rochester, NY
Job Title: Mechanical/Energy Engineer
Job Description: Conduct energy studies to evaluate system wide energy use for industrial and manufacturing facilities. Propose solutions to increase energy efficiency with low payback on investment.
# Years in this position: 2.5 years
Why my job is so SWEet: I have the unique opportunity to work in all different manufacturing plants across NY. We get to see firsthand how products are made. Consulting is a mix of field work and desk work. The work is always different, challenging and fun! My job allows me to propose energy efficient solution to high end users. By implementing these proposed solutions, companies are not only saving oodles of money, but also avoiding unnecessary fossil fuel consumption. Essentially, I am paid to fulfill one of my life long aspirations to save the planet in whatever way I could.
Words of Wisdom for someone starting in my field: Be willing to think critically, make decisions you can stand behind and accept that sometimes you may not always get it right. Failure is the key to success; listen to feedback and learn from others.
How has your work experience prepared you for your position in SWE (or other professional society)? I often need to reach out to clients and facility management for data collection. My networking and communication skills have become more advanced through my position. This skill is helpful in organizing Outreach events, such as the Explorer’s Post.
Do you have any hobbies? After graduation, I started working out at a Crossfit gym three times a week and I love it! I also love cooking and trying new recipes. I’m a huge fan of Paint Nite, puzzles and just going out for dinner with my husband and/or friends.
Something other SWE members may not know about me: I am a balloon artist. I used to make balloon animals at children’s parties. Now I do it at the company BBQ. I was an insurance agent before I became an engineer and I own a home in Johnson City, NY.

Danielle (Dani) Walters
Current SWE Positions: Treasurer (Past Secretary)
Other Professional Society Affiliations: IEEE MTT/AP Chapter Secretary (Microwave Theory & Techniques/Antennas and Propogation)
Education: BS EE from RIT, working toward MS EE from RIT
Employer: Harris Corporation
Title: Electrical Engineer
Time in Position: 3.5 years
Job Description: I design RF printed circuit boards which are used in military radios and vehicular amplifiers. I work on power amplifiers and their associated harmonic filters.
Why my job is SWEet: I get to see a product go through the entire design process: from brainstorming ideas for a design, to seeing the final product being built and manufactured. I love knowing that my radio products are the basis of communication among military personnel. It is very rewarding to hear stories about how these radios have played a part in saving lives. I also get the opportunity to take part in recruiting and outreach events.
Words of Wisdom for someone starting in my field: Know your worth and take every opportunity to learn and grow. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Go after what you want.
How has your work experience prepared you for your position in SWE (or other professional society): I was in SWE as a college student and that gave me many opportunities to develop leadership skills. I was treasurer, vice president/acting president, and participated in many outreach events. I have learned how important it is to be a role model for young women to show them the possibilities of engineering. At Harris I have led a few outreach events and am involved with recruiting. Branching out has allowed me to meet many people I otherwise would not have both within Harris and professionally in Rochester. Making these connections and taking on these roles has in turn helped me progress as a leader in SWE. Every position I take is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Something other SWE members may not know about me: I love the Buffalo Bills and attend at least 1 game a year. I enjoy learning about the process of making wine and beer and have taken many classes on the subject.

Justine Bagley
Current SWE Position: Rochester Section Membership Chair
Education: BS and ME in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Rochester Institute of Technology
Employer: Harris RF Communications
Title: Manufacturing Engineer
Time in Position: 1.5 years
Why my job is SWEet: Every day is different - there are always new problems to solve, new projects to be a part of and new things to learn.
Words of Wisdom for someone starting in my field: Always ask questions. Not only can you learn a lot from those around you but asking questions shows that you are paying attention, eager to learn and could even lead to some great discussions that turn into improvement projects.
How did your outreach experience in college prepare you for the workplace?
The greatest thing I gained from participating in outreach events was learning how to effectively communicate information depending on the audience. For example, my methods of presenting Lean Manufacturing principles to middle school aged kids would be different than talking to high school girls and again would be different if giving a presentation to classmates. Similarly, when I am giving a presentation at work what I choose to talk about, how detailed I get and even style of presentation will differ based on the group of people the information is meant for. In addition to this skill, participating in outreach events helped a lot with building my network and helped me improve upon my public speaking skills.
Something other SWE members may not know about me: I love all things crafty! I actually have my own jewelry business on Etsy. I also love to crochet, sew, and have even refinished some old furniture.

Mackenzie Zimmerman
Current SWE Position: Meeting Coordinator
Other Professional Society Affiliations: ASCE, WTS, RES Gala Committee
Education: BS Civil Engineering, University at Buffalo
Employer: Bergmann Associates
Title: Transportation Design Engineer
Time in Position: 1.5 years
Job Description: My responsibilities include technical investigations, traffic analysis and transportation system planning, street and highway system design, technical report writing, specification development and cost estimating.
Why my job is SWEet: No two days are the same – Every day that I go to work I’m doing something different! Whether it’s a traffic study, a field visit, a public open house for a project or just doing design work at my desk, it’s always something new and exciting. The People - My coworkers are not only super intelligent, but they are approachable and friendly when I need assistance figuring out a problem. Girl Power – Being not only the youngest person in my department, but also being the only female engineer, gives me an edge in the workplace. Having a different perspective than many of my male colleagues has proved to be beneficial for both parties. I’m respected and treated as an equal.
Words of Wisdom for someone starting in my field: Be a sponge! Absorb, absorb, absorb! As a young professional just starting out in this field, my best advice is to listen and gain as much knowledge as you can every day! It is truly amazing how much more I know now, than when I graduated college!
How has your work experience prepared you for your position in SWE? As part of my job I am expected to effectively communicate both written and verbally with many of our major clients. I use these same skills as the SWE Meeting Coordinator when I have to call and investigate local businesses for potential membership events and meetings.
Something other SWE members may not know about me: I was a competitive dancer for 13 years when I was growing up. My sister works in Disney World so I have a sick obsession with vacationing there! I went to Ithaca College for two years before transferring to UB.
Additional Comments: Transpo is such a broad field with so many opportunities that people don’t think about! Look around you… someone had to take the time to decide how long the traffic light at the end of your street should be green, someone decided how wide the parking spots in a parking lot should be, and someone had to decide how fast we should be going through the Can of Worms on I-490… that someone is a Transportation Engineer.

Sara Gilbert, PE, LEED, Env Sp
Current SWE Positions: SWE FY15 Secretary, Rochester Section Rep., RIT Student Section Counselor
Education: BS Clarkson University
Employer: Pinewoods Engineering, P.C.
Title: President/Senior Project Engineer
Job Description: Pinewoods Engineering, P.C. is a civil/site engineering consulting company I started. We provide excellent engineering and service, at a very competitive price, to a select group of clients, whose corporate goals and policies align with our mission. Our mission is to provide support to companies with an interest in: community involvement, environmental sustainability, and promoting education.
How has your job prepared you for your position in SWE: One of my sustainable energy clients seeks public funding in the form of grants and loan securities. I have been on his team helping to write grant applications and form the relationships needed to guide those through the review courses. I was excited to be part of SWE and do grant writing for some of their projects as well.
Why my job is SWEet: I get to work for clients I am proud of. There are some companies doing really great things and I love getting to being a part of it and support them. I really believe in the companies and causes I work for and am as much dedicated to their success as my own corporation’s. I’m challenged all the time. My clients are demanding and their projects can be really challenging. I enjoying working through problems with them and being proud of the results we formulate. My job gives me the opportunity to be involved in the community. Like being a member of SWE and helping to support their incredible outreach efforts and be a part of their talented and impassioned efforts.
Words of Wisdom to someone starting in this field: Don’t ever leave your desk without a paper & pencil. Write down all the direction you’re given, even if you think you’ll remember them. It makes the person giving them feel like you are really listening and they’ll be more open to questions or providing further assistance later.
Something other SWE members may not know about me: I was electrocuted three times while doing the Tough Mudder, once fully submerged in water. I once worked as a camp counselor taking Girl Scouts on week long backpacking trips. I am an avid poker player; in fact, I met my husband during a poker tournament. It came down to just the two of us. I won, but he claims he let me win because he liked me.

Casey Daggett
Current SWE Positions: Rochester Section Outreach Chairperson
Education: BS Mechanical Engineering SUNY Alfred State
Employer: SPX Flow Technology
Title: Application Engineer
Number of Years in Position: 2 years (8 years total at SPX in different roles)
Job Description: I design industrial mixers for large projects all over the world. They are used to make hair products, food, drink, and car fuel; I help your world go round!
Benefits of SWE membership: Being a part of SWE has helped me grow as an engineer personally and professionally. Meeting these great women gave me goals of things to reach for, i.e. Six Sigma Black Belt. It has given me great connections to help with future ideas and endeavors I may want to venture towards.
Why my job is SWEet: I have travelled to some places I never thought I would, like a petroleum plant in the Canadian plains. I keep your water clean – with our mixers in over half of the nation’s waste water treatment plants, I literally clean your water.
Words of Wisdom to someone starting in this field: Leave your emotions at the door and take each day with a mindset of today is just a day tomorrow is a new one.
Something other SWE members may not know about me: I am on an album cover for the local band Muler. I am, or used to be, very good with oil paints and water colors and have sold a few paintings in my prior years.

Title: Configuration Manager
Number of Years in Position: 1 year at HCL, 14 years at Xerox Corporation
Other Professional Affiliations: Black Women’s Leadership Council, National Society of Black Engineers, National Association of Professional Women, and International Leadership Women’s Association
Why my job is SWEet: Today’s business world is global. I am fortunate to interface with people all over the world every day. Engineers are problem solvers – whether it is technical or personal. We change the world around us, we actually define the future or should I say we ‘design’ the future today. Technology is ever changing and I get to add my ideas to the pool for consideration.
Words of Wisdom to someone starting in this field: Your career is what you make it! Understand the unique opportunities that are available to you and determine how you best fit in. And always make time for networking. You never know what you might learn, who you may be able to assist, or who can be of help to you in the future.
Something other SWE members may not know about me: I was a pretty good shot with an M-16 rifle in my days with the Army and I am a blue belt in Karate.

Employer: Rochester Institute of Technology
Title: Senior Lecturer
Number of Years in Position: 8, previously 12 years teaching at Cooper Union in New York City
Other Professional Affiliations: WEPAN, Treasurer
Why my job is SWEet: As faculty advisor, I get to work directly with the young ladies during their college experience. It is rewarding to help guide them to become better leaders, run effective meetings, and become better engineers in the process. To see the growth from freshman year to graduating students is always amazing to watch. During the SWE-RIT outreach activities, it is fun to see the impact our young ladies have on the younger students.
Words of Wisdom to someone starting in this field: You have to love working with young people.
One thing other SWE members may not know about me: I used to play cello in civic symphonies, and would like to get back to playing when I stop being my sons’ chauffeur.

Mary Steblein, PE
Current SWE Positions:
SWE FY15 Secretary, Rochester Section Rep., RIT Student Section Counselor
Education: BS Civil Engineering, Lafayette College
Employer: LaBella Associates, D.P.C
Title: Civil Engineer
Number of Years in Position:
6 years at LaBella, 9 years at URS Corporation
Other Professional Affiliations:
Rochester Engineering Society, President;
American Society of Civil Engineers
Why my job is SWEet:
Working at an engineering consulting firm means there’s an ever-changing variety of projects to work on – every project is unique. After working for years at a satellite office for an international firm, I love working for a smaller, local company and being able to point out projects that my company has designed when traveling around Rochester. As a bonus, LaBella has a great culture – we work hard, but we’re recognized for it…engineers spend so much time at work, it needs to be more than just a workplace.
Words of Wisdom:
Get involved! There’s an organization for everyone, whether it’s related to your career or a special cause. Build up your network because many times it’s “who you know” that matters.
How did your work experience prepare you for being the RES President?
Working with clients, co-workers, and teams from other firms has prepared me to work with the diverse RES Board, and in understanding the needs of the Rochester area engineering community.
